ArthritisYou’ve probably heard that type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol are strongly linked. In fact, these diseases are so interconnected that it is almost surprising when they strike alone.

However, what you might not know or expect is that even an inflammatory disease like arthritis can be a culprit of heart disease.

Recently, arthritis experts associated with the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York discovered how arthritis can lead to heart attack and stroke.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that leads to a chronic inflammation of joints. However, several recent researches have revealed that RA also triggers inflammation in blood vessels. A few troubling facts were discovered when investigating the connection between RA and heart disease. For instance, heart attacks were observed to be TWICE more common in women with Rheumatoid Arthritis than in those without the disease.

Another disturbing fact that was discovered was that, the carotid artery diseases are three times more common in individuals suffering from RA compared to non-sufferers. (Carotid artery disease occurs when plaques builds up in carotid arteries)
Cardiovascular conditions like heart attacks and strokes were noticed to occur about 10 years earlier in people suffering from arthritis compare to those who didn’t have the disease. This might have to do with the fact that arteries of people who suffer from RA harden much faster and way earlier than those who do not have arthritis.

Researchers also observed that when heart attacks occur in people with arthritis, it does not exhibit the usual symptoms and hence is difficult to diagnose. This is sadly one of the reasons why they often turn fatal.

The good news is that there are many things you can do to avoid heart disease and arthritis. In fact, what’s good for treating one is usually good for the other conditions too.

Exercise regularly, choose a healthy diet and live a stress-free life. Smoking, consuming alcohol, eating unhealthy junk food, having high blood pressure and being under a lot of stress are the worst things you could do to your heart and overall health. Try avoiding them as best as you can!
