vitamin_d_high_blood_pressureIn a landmark study out of Loyola University in Chicago, surprising research is published showing the benefits of a common supplement- but for an unexpected group of participants.

Not only did this supplement drastically lower their blood pressure but participants lost a lot of body fat – without doing anything else than taking this supplement.

Usually, when scientists are looking to study high blood pressure, they will use participants whose only issue is high blood pressure but are otherwise in good health.

Researchers at the Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola University in Chicago, though, used a different group altogether to test the effects of supplementing with a common vitamin for people who will almost always suffer high blood pressure as a result of another chronic condition- diabetes.

[adrotate group=”5″]Diabetes and high blood pressure seem to always go hand in hand. In fact, preventing heart disease and stroke is one key reason doctors are so aggressive in getting diabetes to be well-managed for their patients. Diabetes, whether it is type 1 or 2, places stress throughout the body, which naturally leads to high blood pressure.

The researchers in the recent study out of Chicago looked at mood and blood pressure for the diabetic study participants, specifically studying the effects of adding a daily supplement of vitamin D.

What they found was that during the course of the 6 month study, the participants (who had been determined with blood tests to be insufficient in their vitamin D levels) not only had improved mood and elimination of depression symptoms, but also showed a significant improvement in blood pressure readings- almost 8 points systolic on average.

They were even able to lose an extra 3 to 5 pounds on average without changing anything in their diets other than to add the vitamin D.

While the amounts used in the study were more than 7,000 IUs daily for the 6 month period, doctors warn that over-supplementing with any fat-soluble vitamin can be very hard on the liver. The USRDA for vitamin D is currently 600-800 IUs daily. Scientists and doctors urge anyone considering supplementing with vitamin D to first have their blood checked for deficiencies so an ideal level of supplementation can be recommended.

At the same time, though, it is thought that most people consuming a Western diet (characterized by being dominated by processed foods that are high in fat, sodium and carbohydrates with little nutritive benefit) are deficient in Vitamin D.
