Could it be so simple that one common vegetable could really significantly lower blood pressure in just 24 hours?
What new vegetable discovery could be responsible and why have you not heard of it? You have. In fact, this vegetable has been around likely as long as there have been people.
Beetroot juice. It’s been touted lately as a “super” food and practically a cure-all vegetable; however, it’s not just “lately” that this vegetable has been around.
It’s been documented that beetroot juice was used in Roman times to treat everything from fever to acne and was also used as an aphrodisiac.
While I wouldn’t discount these properties based on all of my research into beetroot juice benefits, my focus is on its effect on blood pressure.
For some time we’ve known that this juice may lower blood pressure, but in a 2010 British study researchers discovered that nitrate is the ingredient in the juice responsible for lowering blood pressure.
In this study, participants were divided into 3 groups and given beetroot juice, nitrate pills and a placebo, respectively.
Those on the juice and nitrate pills had a significant blood pressure reduction within less than 24 hours, compared to the placebo group.
Given that many with high blood pressure can end up on multiple medications, beetroot juice is a great option. Just be aware that beetroot juice on its own can have a burning effect on the throat. If you want to avoid that, mix it with a carrot/apple juice combination.
Unfortunately, researchers have also advised that beetroot juice is a “love it” or “hate it” type of drink. Some people just can’t drink it, no matter how healthy it may be.
Plus they leave no bad taste in the throat 😉
Why not just eat beetroot on a regular basis? I find the beet juice is often expensive.
Thank you I will try that.
Great article and information on beet juice, however with everything there is some kind of side effect for some people and they never tell you about the possible bad side effects on these studies. Nor do they tell you how much beet juice to drink to get the lower blood pressure. For years they were pushing POM juice as the miracle drink to get your blood pressure down and clean your arteries. And o’course the price of POM juice went sky high and is now $10.00 for 48 OZ. They first said 2 OZ a day would do it but that proved to be a lie. Now theey claim 8 oz a day to lower blood pressure. However at 8 oz a day causes diarrhea and extrem gas for many people as side effects. So what is the side effects of beet juice, how much to drink, what is the cost and outside of making your own where do you get it?
Beets are a root. I tried canned sliced beets because they contain a lot of juice. I put 2 cans of sliced beets and juice into my juicer along with 2 carrots, 2 apples and 2 celery stalks. The other ingredients make the beet juice bearable to drink. This juice mix will last me for 4 or 5 days. I find it easier to just take Lisinopril. If I were having serious side affects (chronic cough and/or joint pain), I would definitely use beet juice.
Very valid questions Jerry. I personally believe Pomegranate is a little bit hyped as miracle cure. We need balance in our diet and lifestyle and that’s what makes us healthy. No one pill or ingredient is going to cure everything.
By far the best way to get the beet juice is to buy a juicer and some fat, cheap beets and juice it at home. It will always be much tastier, energizing and cheaper than buying pre-made juice from a bottle. Throw in some carrots, celery, apples or whatever else you like.
Studies have shown that 250ml of beet juice per day lowers blood pressure average 10 points. This is of course average and will of course not work for everyone. This shouldn’t cause any side effects either.
Hope this helped,
Christian G
What about simply boiling/steaming the beets and eating them; do you get the same benefits? Thanks.
As a practicing Naturopath I have over the years recommended a glassful made up of one third of each, water, beetroot juice and pure red grape juice for control of high blood pressure. This morning my reading was 130 over 60, not bad for a young fellow with age in the mid 80s. My encyclopaedia ‘HEALTH IS WEALTH’ contains natural remedies for over 1,200 ailments including control of hypertension.

I have read where the young leaves of beets are even more effective than the root. Just put them in a salad. Also saw where celery is a good veggy to reduce blood pressure on its own. 4 stalks each day. Celery is a regenerating veggy. A new stalk will grow from the base of a bunch base from the store. Cut it off about a inch and a half up and place it in a pie tin with about a 1/4 in of water. keep it in water until a stalk developes , once roots form and a small stalk appears place it in moist potting soil keep it moist then until its about 4 to 5 inches tall and it has about 5 leaves forming. cut back the water to harden the roots about 48 hours. then transplant it to a garden spot. If you juice celery you can use the entire plant including the button base.
Four tea spoon of olive oil will keep your B/P at a normal reading. I know because I take this everyday,
I make my special drink every morning, I lost 50 lbs. and maintain this weight lost plus my blood pressure stays at a normal range, in my drink I add 1 tea spoon of cod liver oil, and four tea spoon of olive oil, my b/p stays normal every day, I take my blood pressure and blood check for my diabetes, sometimes at night while watching T V I break my fast by eating a little too much sweets, but if I watch my sweet intake I can maintain my blood sugar count as well, mjv

To me beetroot juice taste bad, am not sure if I can manage it, but am going to try it again. my concern is: if watermelon can cure highbood pressure, beetroot can lower it , then why so many people still have this problem?
why tell us about vegetable and what it can do. and not telling us the good things weed is doing now for alot of sick people around the world now
Very effective. I'd tried it on my Mum.
It stains, that's my problem with beetrots.I discard the water and use the roots
