Research from Spanish scientists released in the journal Diabetes has shown, for the first time ever in an animal of its size, that Type 1 diabetes can be cured.

This study gives great hope that soon type 1 diabetes can be cured in humans and may help fight the battle against type 2 diabetes as well.

While the exact mechanism of the gene therapy that was used for the canines might not work as well in humans, as the study authors note, it does bring them one step closer to a cure for what has always been regarded as incurable for humans.

Using viruses that were carrying genes for insulin and glucokinase (both critical in metabolizing glucose), the viruses were injected into the skeletal muscles of the dogs.

After a period of time, and even after exercise, researchers found no evidence of trouble regulating blood sugar or suffering bouts of hypoglycemia.

The scientists acknowledge that attempting the same process in humans may not work, but it definitely gives them a place to start when researching new treatments to replace insulin supplement therapy.
