So, what really is the best way to control cholesterol?

While we’re learning more and more about how diet can help and even cure different conditions including high cholesterol, it gets a little tricky when faced with new choices.

For decades we’ve been hearing the same song about reducing cholesterol and saturated fat from our diets to reduce bad blood cholesterol and increase good. Makes sense right?

Another view is to increase amount of good anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidizing food in our diet. This specific dietary portfolio includes lots of fruits and vegetables and other healthy ingredients.

So which way is better; cutting out bad or adding in good?

Two studies conducted at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto put that idea to the test – literally.

In comparing groups who ate based on the specific dietary portfolio to those who ate based on a low-fat low-cholesterol diet, it was found that the group who ate the specific portfolio foods were far more successful at lowering their bad cholesterol than those who concentrated on a “low-cholesterol diet.”

One of the studies added yet another variable; low cholesterol diet along with taking statins.
Guess what? Both the groups who ate based on the dietary portfolio only and those who took the statin combined with a low cholesterol diet show exactly the same improvement at reducing bad cholesterol levels. The first group however, suffered no side effects.

In other words, we’re better off eating right instead of just reducing the amount of wrong foods even when medicating the problem.
