People with a certain kind of arthritis are 4 times more likely to have gum disease, and it is frequently more severe than their counterparts without arthritis, studies show.

In a study comparing almost 200 people, equally split between those having rheumatoid arthritis and those who don’t, researchers found that people with RA were 4 times more likely to have gum disease.

They were quick to point out that RA didn’t cause gum disease, nor did gum disease necessarily contribute to RA.

However, it was noted that when one exists, it is important to be on the lookout for other factors indicating the other would soon be diagnosed, giving patients a chance to mitigate the development of other inflammatory conditions.
