Eating a diet free of meat and all animal products helps diabetics lose weight and control their blood sugar, according to a review published in Nutrition Reviews.

In this review paper, scientists poured over 12 previously published studies investigating the influence of vegetarian and vegan diets on diabetes management.

They found that the studies overwhelmingly found that a vegan diet helped promote weight loss.

However, they note that the improved blood sugar that diabetic vegans experienced wasn’t solely due to weight reduction. They report that eating more dietary fiber, vegetable proteins and antioxidants also helped fight blood sugar.
