Undue focus on diet, exercise and blood sugar management –while ignoring mental health—may make diabetes treatments less effective, a study published in the Annals of Family Medicine found.

In this study, a group of 180 type 2 diabetics were treated in one of two groups. One group received typical medical and lifestyle care while the second group also underwent treatment for depression.

While only 1/3rd of the traditional treatment group improved their long-term diabetes control, more than 65% of the participants in the integrated group were successful in managing their type 2 diabetes.
