Living in cities with high levels of air pollution can increase insulin resistance and make people more prone to type 2 diabetes, the results of a Danish research study suggests.

A particular pollutant, known as nitric oxide, is specifically tied to increases in blood sugar levels. The study, published in Diabetes Care adds to mounting research which ties air pollution to blood glucose control and diabetes risk.

The researchers behind the study note that air pollution may increase systemic inflammation in the body, which can interfere with the action of the hormone insulin.
