The blood pressure medications prescribed to you by your doctor may be doing more harm than good, a surprising study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found. The study researchers investigated approximately 1000 residents of New York City that were involved in a city-wide program to fight high blood pressure.

While blood pressure medications lowered blood pressure across the board, a significant number of individuals found themselves with higher blood pressure levels after taking anti-hypertension medication. Approximately 7 percent of those in the study suffered from these counterintuitive effects. The study found that beta blockers and ACE inhibitors were the two classes of high blood pressure drugs most likely to boost blood pressure levels.
