An advanced degree, a raise or a promotion fights off blood pressure better than most anti-hypertension medications, an intriguing study published in this week’s Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health has found.

In this study of more than 12000 adults, a team of Swedish scientists found that those with the highest levels of social status –as measured by income and occupation—were significantly less likely to develop hypertension. Adding credibility to the study is the fact that all of the 12,000 research subjects were same-sex twins –nullifying a genetic component to the team’s results.
