The drill sergeant approach to weight loss may be less effective than positive body image, according to results published in this week’s edition of the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. In this study it was discovered that one of the strongest links to sustained weight loss was a positive body image.

The effects of staying positive about your body while cutting calories is significant: the researchers found that those with the most positive body image lost 5 percent more body weight than those with poor self esteem. The research team thinks that boosting body image can increase self-efficacy—the belief that one can meet goals. Self-efficacy has been shown in several studies to correlate with weight loss success.
