It’s common knowledge that bad breath and missing teeth canhurt your sex life. But according to a team of scientists fromChina’s Luzhou Medical College, poor oral hygiene can up yourrisk of erectile dysfunction as well. The results from this studyare consistent with many others that have linked periodontitiswith a number of other chronic diseases, including diabetes andheart disease.

Using animal models, the study found a direct connection betweenperiodontitis –gum inflammation—and an inability to achieveand maintain an erection. The study authors note that doctorsshould start taking note of their patient’s mouths beforeprescribing medications for ED and that those with ED may benefitby taking more time to care for their mouths.
