Studies show that one out of every three American adults suffers from hypertension, or high blood pressure. Hypertension is a health condition which does not develop overnight, but develops slowly over a period time. Factors that contribute to the development of hypertension are: stress, depression, bad eating habits, and sedentary lifestyle.

Findings of studies conducted to determine how healthy American students mentally are, shows that presence of hypertension in so many American adults is not surprising – 18 million college students in America are believed to have mental health issues. Statistics point that in comparison to the previous decade, in this decade 50% more college students have been diagnosed with depression. Also, in this decade there has been 100% rise in use of psychiatric medications among American college students.

Stress and mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety contribute immensely to the development of hypertension. In fact, researches show that college students who have higher blood pressure than normal are thrice more likely to acquire hypertension as they grow old.

The situation indeed appears grim, but experts believe transcendental meditation can help us escape the writing on the wall. A latest study shows that transcendental meditation is very effective in reducing high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety among at-risk college students.

The Study

A group of 298 college students were selected and among these students, 159 students were diagnosed as at-risk for hypertension. The group was divided into two sub-groups. One group of students was given instructions on how to practice transcendental meditation, while the second group served as a control group.

Findings

At the beginning of the study and after three months, the blood pressure, coping abilities, and psychological distress levels of the students were measured. It was found that students who were at-risk to hypertension and practiced transcendental meditation showed a remarkable improvement in comparison to the at-risk students in the control group.

At-risk students who practiced transcendental meditation recorded a drop of 4.0 mm Hg in diastolic blood pressure and 6.3 mm Hg drop in systolic blood pressure. In layman’s term, the risk of developing hypertension later in life in at-risk students who practiced transcendental meditation reduced by whopping 52%.
