Medications Useless Unless Diabetics Lose Weight

Many diabetics become frustrated when they see a sky-high blood sugar reading despite religiously taking their medications. A study published in this week’s Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism found that managing blood sugar in type 2 diabetics who are obese is nearly impossible unless they reduce their body weight.

In the study, a group of 4000 type 2 diabetics were followed. Those that remained obese over the 2-year period had significantly more trouble keeping their blood sugar in check –despite taking the same medications as the normal or slightly overweight group. In fact, only one-third of the obese group was able to achieve normal blood sugar levels.

Reduce Blood Sugar By Lowering Cholesterol

Reducing high cholesterol levels may do more than protect your heart –it can also make blood sugar easier to manage—reports a research team from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. In their study, a group of diabetic mice were given a compound that reduced cholesterol production in their blood. They found that the mice’s blood sugar dramatically improved, without changes to their diet.

The researchers hypothesize that lowering cholesterol helps reduce inflammation –the underlying cause of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.  They add that diabetics should aim to aggressively treat their cholesterol in order to better control blood sugar.

What is Nitroglycerin?

We get this question a lot.  Usually, the people asking are those that are either newly diagnosed with a heart condition or have a loved one who just did.

The condition it is used primarily for is Coronary Artery Disease, or CAD. This is when the blood vessels surrounding the heart begin to narrow.  This puts a tremendous amount of strain on the heart in order to get the blood pumped through the body.

This strain, and acute attacks of it, are called angina.  This is the pain in the chest that people feel with stress in different forms such as that experienced during strenuous exercise, episodes of fear or anger, and environmental triggers that impact the body’s function such as heat exhaustion.
When prescribed for people with CAD, nitroglycerin comes in the form of a spray or a tablet.

Tablets can be the kind that dissolve quickly under the tongue for acute onset situations, or the extended release kind that is more for prevention of episodes.

It is not used to cure CAD; it only prevents or stops the angina attacks that result from it.

While this medication has many times been the primary factor in saving the lives of those with CAD during severe angina attacks, it carries a host of detrimental baggage with it.

This Is Crucial For Diabetes Management

According to a large-scale research study published this week in Diabetes Care, poor sleep is closely linked to insulin resistance and poor blood glucose management in type 2 diabetics. As lead author of the study Kristen Knutson, PhD states, diabetics that don’t sleep enough “…have a reduced quality of life. And, they have a reduced life expectancy.”

While the poor sleep/insulin resistance tie is nothing new, the results from this study are important because it demonstrates the extent that sleep interferes with insulin’s action. They discovered that 82% of diabetics that had “poor sleep” either from sleep apnea or simply lack of adequate sleeping hours had higher blood glucose levels than diabetics that got enough shut eye.

The study authors claim that the blood glucose benefits of getting enough sleep rival many common diabetic drugs for managing blood sugar.

Protein Shakes and Diabetic Kidney

protein shakeToday we will examine another request from the comment section of the blog, which was simply the phrase “protein shakes and diabetic kidney.” The person requesting didn’t specify what he or she wanted to know within this subject, so as I poked into it, I had to assume the request was to find out why this is a terrible combination.

I’m going to begin with the end in mind: diabetics should never, ever drink protein or meal replacement shakes, and not because of the sugar.

Boosting Low Moods Boosts Diabetes Self-Care

Letting your diabetes get you down may make the disease more challenging to manage according to results published in this week’s Medical Care. In this study, diabetics that received counseling for depression improved blood pressure, exercise levels and overall quality of life when compared to a similar group that only received physical diabetic treatment.

Depression and diabetes are often found together –The University of South Carolina Center for Health Care Research notes that nearly 75% of diabetics suffer from depression at any given time. The results from this study shows that treating mood allows those with type 2 diabetes to take control of their health –those that received the depression treatment tended to follow through with their health care team’s advice more than those that remained depressed.

This ONE Vitamin Quickly Improves Arthritis and Diabetes

Repeated studies have proven that vitamin D is the single most important vitamin for people suffering both arthritis and diabetes. This is very important to know since 75% of people don’t get enough of this health-boosting vitamin.

Many people report drastic improvements in only a few days after correcting their vitamin D deprivation.

Best (and the cheapest) source of vitamin D is from the sun. Just 15-30 minutes of sun is usually enough from spring to fall. This however is not possible in the winter time. As we grow older, our skin also loses the ability to absorb vitamin from the sun.

You should therefore definitely begin taking vitamin D supplements daily. On top of that, eat plenty of fatty fish, milk products and other vitamin D rich food.

Type 2 Diabetes Causes Hearing Loss

According to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, hearing loss is twice as common for adults with type 2 diabetes compared to those people same age. Hearing tests are rarely taken in association with diabetes tests. So if you suffer diabetes, make sure to ask your doctor to give you a hearing test so any troubles can be discovered early.

Hearing problems can cause some very tough social isolation for elderly people. So this is just one more reason to do everything in your power to manage type 2 diabetes naturally.

A Simple, Sweet Treat for Your Diabetic Valentine

The seasonal aisles have been stuffed to the brim since New Year’s Day with the trappings of sugar-shock wrapped in pink, red, and white ribbons. The candy overload since Halloween takes no breaks, it seems.

But what can you do for your Valentine that says not only “I really care about you,” but also “I get it.” By that I mean, “I get that your diet is challenging and that is important to me.”

There is something inherently nice about receiving a gift on a special occasion, but what gets lost sometimes is the passion and emotion that comes from something made by hand with love.
