<p>Their conclusions? Inflammation is the cause of the vast majority of high blood pressure cases and that cutting down on salt isn’t as effective as many believe. They note that reducing inflammation will inevitably also reduce hypertension is most people and should therefore form the first line of attack against high blood pressure.</p>

They hypothesize that Frankincense contains unique compounds that shut down the chronic inflammation that exacerbates arthritis. The scientists add that Frankincense is an attractive natural alternative to prescription drugs that often bring on side effects.</p>

<p>She asked about alternatives specifically to a procedure whereby a stent is placed in a narrowing artery near the heart to keep it open.</p>
<p>What caught her attention was the specific phrase “stable angina.”  This means that the narrowing will cause pain or tightness in the chest with exertion like exercise, although with no acute danger like you’d see in a heart attack.</p>
<p><span id="more-1778"></span></p>
<p>A family member of hers had it done and apparently it went badly, as there were blood clot and bleeding issues involved that nearly did him in.  </p>
<p>This scared her to her core so she started her quest to find an alternative to the knife.</p>
<p>Her doctor’s primary directive, which was echoed in the news article, was to get the cholesterol under control…NOW.</p>
<p>Her arteries were narrowing because of the glue-like sludge that was clogging them up.  While a stent may help temporarily to alleviate the short-term problem in one part of the artery, it does nothing to correct the long-term issue.  Her lifestyle was killing her.</p>
<p>Add to that the fact that stents used in this way actually don’t decrease the risk of heart attack, anyway. Even with the stent she’d have to make some major changes.</p>
<p>So my advice to her and to anyone who writes in facing dangerous drug therapies or a potential surgical intervention for a condition is to stop for a moment and consider all the facts.</p>
<p>While some surgeries can’t be avoided, a staggering number of them can.</p>
<p>Other examples from the story were fusion of the vertebrae for neck and back problems and knee arthroscopy.</p>
<p>For the fusion example, the more effective and less dangerous alternative is physical therapy combined with inflammation-reducing treatments such as acupuncture or guided neck exercises.</p>
<p>With arthroscopy, all the advice points to looking at less invasive alternatives first such as exercise, dietary supplementation, and other more natural treatments.  All of this is  outlined in Shelly Manning’s <a href="http://blueheronhealthnews.com/arthritis/">Arthritis Guide</a>.</p>
<p>While not as invasive, prescription drugs are also extremely overused in most treatment plans, and many times patients are willing to accept the horrendous side effects because snapping up a pill seems easier than the work required to naturally correct a chronic condition.</p>
<p>The point of all this is not to tell you to never have surgery or take prescription drugs. Sometimes those are the only realistic treatment options.</p>
<p>However, and more to the actual point, it should always be part of your visits with the care provider to at least look at these treatments with a critical eye and a cautious attitude.</p>
<p>Open a very candid dialogue with your doctor, and also with those who will be caring for you while you recover from the surgeries or would suffer drug side effects right along with you regarding other reasonable options.</p>
<p>Sometimes doctors actually prefer that their patients go the natural route, because it is generally more effective, safer, and more permanent.  But they are realists, too, and know that some patients simply just won’t commit to solve problems naturally.</p>

<p>There are other doctors out there who disagree, though. Many go so far as to say that with the right support, supplements, and exercise, that the cartilage can be rebuilt, thereby avoiding the knife and very expensive surgery.</p>

<p>The reason cartilage deteriorates is usually due to three key causes:</p>
<p>-Arthritis or another similar disease process<br />
-Obesity<br />
-Wrong body positioning, placing excess stress on joints and cartilage</p>
<p>Whether you have started taking it or not yet, the supplement combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate is a must. These two, especially together, both are effective at slowing and even stopping the progression of joint damage in most everyone who takes them.</p>
<p>They are very effective at putting out the fire in the single most damaging symptom of arthritis: inflammation.</p>
<p>There is even a growing body of evidence that they work to reverse the damage and promote the re-growth of cartilage throughout the body.  The importance here is that there may be options other than surgery to not only prevent but heal this problem.</p>
<p>Other boxes that absolutely must be checked before accepting surgery as a viable option include losing the weight that might be killing you. Aside from the hypertension, risk of diabetes and cancer, and host of other ailments that are avoidable, it is absolutely imperative that your body weight get as close to ideal and healthy as possible.</p>

<p>Once you have your supplement and weight loss plans ready for execution, you want to get more information on the surgical alternatives that your doctor is offering.</p>
<p>There are two kinds of joint replacement: partial and total.</p>
<p>Your chances of avoiding the surgical suite altogether are much higher if you are a candidate for the partial.  This means that, as in the case of the knee example, only a part of the joint will be replaced or reshaped, such as where the knee cap connects to the tibia or femur.</p>
<p>Even though these surgeries offer a much quicker recovery time than a total replacement, they still carry some risks that you will want to weigh carefully before consenting to the procedure. Looking at the risks and paired with alternatives, sometimes surgery isn’t the best option.</p>
<p>Risks include (but are not limited to):</p>
<p>-bleeding<br />
-infection<br />
-reaction to medications or prostheses<br />
-chronic pain<br />
-trouble breathing<br />
-deep vein thrombosis and other blood vessel issues</p>
<p>Alternatives, aside from those mentioned above, also would include physical therapy or chiropractics. These treatments can also offer some re-training on body positioning and mechanics to help you learn how to avoid some of the stress that is degrading your joints.</p>
<p>Equipment and other aides that reposition you or help you ambulate better can buy your body time to naturally rebuild its own cartilage. There are physicians who still believe that cartilage doesn’t regenerate like bone does, but some studies are proving them wrong.</p>
<p>One study listed in the <em>Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery</em> followed more than 60 patients for over 12 years after experimental arthroscopy (less invasive than traditional un-compartmental knee replacement surgery) after implanting a paste of cartilage crushed from one part of the body into the damaged areas.</p>
<p>The study’s results showed that in almost 2/3 of the participants, they were able to re-grow viable, durable cartilage in the knee that was still intact more than 12 years after the procedure.</p>

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was one that readers emailed Christian about right from the start and while some were asking about the program&#8217;s use for CPS, most were asking the difference between CPS and arthritis.</p>
<p>Arthritis and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are two different issues, but can (and frequently do) occur together.  In fact, people who already have Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis are at a much greater risk of developing CPS.</p>
<p>The reason is because of the process that affects people with arthritis. Arthritis is an inflammation of the joint and connective tissues.  The cartilage is broken down over time, and the smooth surfaces of the bones become rough and no longer glide smoothly.</p>
<p>Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition where the median nerve that supplies feeling and function to the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring fingers becomes compressed and pinched by swelling inside the bones that make up the carpal tunnel.</p>
<p><span id="more-1475"></span><br />
If someone suffering arthritis has damage in the hands, wrist, and arms, this creates even less space for the median nerve and contributes to the pinching and compression.</p>
<p>Other conditions put people at higher risk as well, such as metabolic problems that stress out the kidneys and liver.  Since these organs are supposed to filter waste from the body, there are inflammation effects throughout the system when waste can’t be purged.</p>
<p>Controlling the occurrence or severity of CPS takes on new urgency when considering what the other risk factors are.  It doesn’t discriminate…all races and both genders are at risk, and the biggest factors are age and occupation.</p>
<p>People of “working” age, from 30 to 60 (when many of these other risk factor conditions start to develop) are the most frequently affected by CPS. This is because the instigating cause is repetitive movements of the hand and wrist, such as what you’d find with computer users, jobs requiring hand tools, and some leisure activities like sewing or racquetball.</p>
<p>People start to suspect something is wrong when the tingling in the fingers, thumb and palm develops. It becomes problematic when the sufferer sees that there is an interruption of daily work duties due to the weakness and pain that are also symptoms of CPS.</p>
<p>Other than wrist pain and swelling that comes with CPS, the symptoms are a bit different than with arthritis. That’s generally the key in knowing it’s time to call the doctor for an evaluation and maybe some intervention.</p>
<p>The inflammation that causes the severe and debilitating pain and disfigurement of arthritis is markedly different than the tingling, numbness, and ‘pins and needles’ sensation that is the trademark of CPS. Sufferers may have found methods to alleviate their arthritis symptoms and regain mobility and function only to find that CPS has rendered the thumb side of their hand(s) increasingly useless.</p>
<p>Treatment can be similar between the two conditions, such as heat and cold compresses, but with CPS you may generally start with splints worn at night for a few weeks.  Depending upon the severity, daytime use may be needed as well.</p>
<p>Natural methods to improve the condition are always preferred, and thankfully are pretty effective. Sometimes it is just a matter of changing out the kind of tool you use to do your job, such as re-positioning a keyboard or using a different kind of wrench.</p>
<p>However, it could involve a reassignment of duties to avoid using vibrating tools such as certain kinds of drills.</p>
<p>There is a possibility that you could need surgery if your CPS has progressed to a really severe state, but interventions early enough might keep you from needing something that intrusive.</p>
<p>Prevention is the best method of avoiding all the complications that come from this condition, so keeping other illnesses managed, having a work place ergonomist evaluate what you do and how you do it for improvements, and proper supplements to maintain joint, bone, and nerve health go a very long way to the prevention of CPS.</p>

<p>Best (and the cheapest) source of vitamin D is from the sun. Just 15-30 minutes of sun is usually enough from spring to fall. This however is not possible in the winter time. As we grow older, our skin also loses the ability to absorb vitamin from the sun.</p>
<p>You should therefore definitely begin taking vitamin D supplements daily. On top of that, eat plenty of fatty fish, milk products and other vitamin D rich food.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Some time ago, an avid reader wrote in reporting sleep issues.  Unlike many people who suffer from insomnia, he knew when and very likely why the problem started.</p>
<p>He had acquired Lyme disease.  Sleep disturbances as well as chronic fatigue complaints are not uncommon in people who have this disease.</p>
<p>This nasty disease is typically known to start with a rash which then leads to fevers, aches, and chills.  Arthritis and other disorders can also occur as a result of acquiring Lyme disease.  Deer ticks can carry the bacteria, and this is about the time of year we see an ‘up-tick’ in tick bites. Yes…pun intended.</p>

<p>Given the symptoms of the disease itself, it seems little wonder that his sleep would be negatively affected.  People complain of not being able to fall asleep as well as awakening frequently throughout </p>
<p>Such poor sleep (or lack of sleep altogether) at night then leads to the being excessively tired and sleepy during the day.  A fair percentage of Lyme disease sufferers also complain of restless leg syndrome at night.</p>
<p>Such fatigue, of course, can then create an environment for even more ancillary harm to the body.  When we are worn out physically and mentally, we are primed for other illnesses and injuries.</p>
<p>Such a serious disease requires consistent medical attention.  However, there are many natural ways to significantly help alleviate many of the symptoms, including sleep disturbances.</p>
<p>Creating a comfortable sleep routine and sleeping environment is especially important for anyone who suffers from sleep problems.  Relaxation is a necessity in aiding sleep, so establishing a soothing nocturnal ritual can help with this aspect.  </p>
<p>Noise control makes sense to help ensure sleep continues uninterrupted.  Abolishing the many brain stimulants such as the television shortly before bed time will also help.  A better option would be to practice relaxation exercises combined with peaceful music.</p>
<p>A number of people tout the benefits of certain natural herbs to help with both symptom control and even Lyme disease treatment.  As always, I caution you to research this and consult with a trusted herbalist or other alternative treatment practitioner before attempting to cure the disease.  </p>
<p>As with all ailments, this is also an especially important time to ensure proper nutrition.  It seems obvious, but often we crave the less nutritious “comfort foods” when we are in pain, are extra tired and are suffering.  Those comfort foods, though, do not offer long term benefits; whereas a healthy diet will help create strength and energy which is needed to combat any health ailment.</p>
<p>Given the many issues (many of them debilitating) that accompany Lyme disease, I offer complete sympathy to sufferers and appreciate the opportunity to share some information.</p>
